Breast Care After Your Core Needle Biopsy

Ice your breast inside your bra on top of the pressure dressing intermittently for a minimum of six hours or until bed time.
Wear a supportive bra at all times, including sleeping for the next week.
Call us during business hours, or call your local Emergency Room after hours, if you see more than one teaspoon full of blood on the gauze, or if you feel a hard mass developing under the skin of the breast.
DO NOT shower or bathe for 24 hours after your biopsy. Hold a dry washcloth over the area when you do shower. Dry the biopsy site each time after you shower and place some Neosporin and a new gauze on top of the steri-strips at the biopsy site.
Replace the gauze and Neosporin daily until you see the Doctor.
DO NOT take aspirin, aspirin containing products, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) until you see your Doctor. For ordinary pain, take up to 1000 mg of Tylenol every 4-6 hours as needed.
You may have mild discomfort in your breast and you may have a small amount of bruising where the needle entered the skin.
Do not participate in strenuous activities for 48 hours, i.e., tennis, golf, aerobics, weight lifting, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, ect. Do not swim, take a bath, or use a hot tub or Jacuzzi for one week after the procedure, i.e. do not immerse the site in water for one week.
Be aware of excessive bleeding or pain. If either occur, contact us at The breast Health Center at (760) 775-5378 or contact the your Emergency Room after hours and advise us of what problems you are having.
