Breast Care After Your Core Needle Biopsy
- Ice your breast inside your bra on top of the pressure dressing intermittently for a minimum of six hours or until bed time.
- Wear a supportive bra at all times, including sleeping for the next week.
- Call us during business hours, or call your local Emergency Room after hours, if you see more than one teaspoon full of blood on the gauze, or if you feel a hard mass developing under the skin of the breast.
- DO NOT shower or bathe for 24 hours after your biopsy. Hold a dry washcloth over the area when you do shower. Dry the biopsy site each time after you shower and place some Neosporin and a new gauze on top of the steri-strips at the biopsy site.
- Replace the gauze and Neosporin daily until you see the Doctor.
- DO NOT take aspirin, aspirin containing products, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) until you see your Doctor. For ordinary pain, take up to 1000 mg of Tylenol every 4-6 hours as needed.
- You may have mild discomfort in your breast and you may have a small amount of bruising where the needle entered the skin.
- Do not participate in strenuous activities for 48 hours, i.e., tennis, golf, aerobics, weight lifting, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, ect. Do not swim, take a bath, or use a hot tub or Jacuzzi for one week after the procedure, i.e. do not immerse the site in water for one week.
- Be aware of excessive bleeding or pain. If either occur, contact us at The breast Health Center at (760) 775-5378 or contact the your Emergency Room after hours and advise us of what problems you are having.
