About the Breast Health Center

Marla R. Lander, M.D. has created the Breast Health Center in recognition of the need for early detection of breast cancers and optimum screening of the breasts, excellent comprehensive clinical care, and educating women and their families about how to maintain or regain optimum breast health.

The original center was founded in 1997, interrupted in 2001, (when the 3rd of 4 babies graced the Lander household), and reinstated in 2003, at our current site in Indio, California.

Our goal is to provide exceptional breast health care in a safe and warm environment. We are a small center, which is integral to providing a personalized touch.

Dr. Lander first became interested in this disease in college when her grandmother, Rose Weiss was originally diagnosed with breast cancer. Rose was a remarkably caring and wise woman. She was a 20-year survivor when she was again diagnosed with a different type of breast cancer in her remaining breast. Rose, with the aid of her physicians and family, conquered her disease completely, and graced all of us with her wisdom and humor until her mid 90’s. Since her last diagnosis, other family members have been afflicted.

Dr. Lander is devoting her life to detecting breast cancer early and to educating her fellow physicians and the public. Breast cancer found early can be cured with only minimal treatment. New data suggests that cancers 9mm, (1/3 of an inch), and under, in size, have a 97% survival 24 years later, with only surgical removal! She is working hard to find those early cancers, and help those with a diagnosis of breast cancer… until the time when the world finds a cure.

Rose Weiss eventually died of complications from a hip fracture secondary to osteoporosis. We also perform DEXA, or bone density studies at the center as part of our woman’s health program.

Finally, the Breast Health Center is dedicated to Dr. Laszlo Tabar’s teachings and principles. He is said to be the international father of mammography. Dr. Lander had the privilege of studying with Dr. Tabar in Sweden. Dr. Tabar is a great man who has dedicated his life to improving the lives of women and decreasing their death rate through early detection. He has performed extensive renowned studies, published numerous acclaimed textbooks and educational articles, and currently gives lectures internationally. The Breast Health Center emphasizes his model: the application of hard scientific facts based on research, with a compassionate approach and delivery of health care.
